The 2018 Geneva Motor Show has seen Michelin reveal the new MICHELIN Pilot Sport that will equip the latest-generation FIA ABB Formula E Championship all-electric cars when Season 5 (2018/2019) gets going at the end of the year.
The new MICHELIN Pilot Sport is both lighter and more energy-efficient than ever thanks to a particularly ambitious development programme.
Lighter
The new front MICHELIN Pilot Sport tips the scales at 2kg less, while the rear is 2.5kg lighter! That’s a saving of approximately 9kg – almost 20 percent – per set of four!
More efficient
Tyres have a direct impact on the travelling range of any vehicle, so Michelin has worked on the construction and rolling resistance of the latest-generation MICHELIN Pilot Sport to optimise its energy efficiency. The new tyre will consequently extend the range of the Formula E single-seaters, without sacrificing either performance or driver safety.
More similar to road tyres
Thanks to its patterned tread and interior diameter of 18 inches, the MICHELIN Pilot Sport resembles a road tyre. The only sign that it is actually intended for racing is the graphic design visible on its sidewalls. Even so, its construction and the compounds selected for its tread conceal significant technological innovations that could well be carried over to production tyres in the future.
The MICHELIN Pilot Sport will make its first competitive appearance when Season 5 of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship kicks off in December.
