MotoGP: Lorenzo claims Red Bull Ring spoils for Ducati/Michelin

12/08/2018

The Motorrad Grand Prix von Österreich – Round 11 of the 2018 MotoGPTM World Championship – saw Jorge Lorenzo (Ducati Team/Michelin) emerge on top after a tremendous scrap with Marc Marquez (2nd, Repsol Honda Team/Michelin) to collect his third victory of the season at Austria’s Red Bull Ring. Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team/Michelin) was third.

Racing on soft-compound MICHELIN Power Slicks front and rear, Lorenzo completed the first of the afternoon’s 28 laps in front, chased by pole-sitter Marquez and Dovizioso.

The world champion, who had opted for medium and hard MICHELIN Power Slicks front and rear, recovered the lead on Lap 2 and defended it until Lorenzo found a way past on Lap 18. Marquez then tucked in behind the Majorcan and the pair provided another thrilling battle during the closing laps as they traded first place. Lorenzo emerged ahead for good early on the last lap and held firm to pocket his third win of 2018.

The day’s fastest race lap (1m23.277s) helped Dovizioso (medium MICHELIN Power Slicks front and rear) to secure third spot and make it three different tyre options on the podium.

Fourth-placed Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda/Michelin) was the first independent team rider home, ahead of Danilo Petrucci (Alma Pramac Racing/Michelin).

Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP/Michelin) staged a spectacular fightback from 14th on the grid to sixth at the flag, chased by Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team/Michelin) and Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar/Michelin). Johann Zarco (Monster Yamaha Tech3/Michelin) and Alvaro Bautista (Angel Nieto Team/Michelin) rounded out the top 10.

Six different tyre combinations were chosen for the Austrian GP which saw Marquez (201 points) extend his provisional championship lead to 59 points over Rossi. Lorenzo (71) is third.
