Meet Mazda MX-5 Cup rookie and Sebring race winner Westin Workman

16/03/2024

It didn’t take long for Westin Workman to prove he could be a winner in the Mazda MX-5 Cup. He won Friday at Sebring in just the fourth race of his rookie season with BSI Racing.

Workman also won the MX-5 Cup Shootout in November of 2023 after Mazda watched two days of driving, interviews and analyzed data at Carolina Motorsports Park.

“The way the shootout works is it’s an evaluation of how you present yourself, how you market yourself and obviously your on-track skills, they look at all those factors,” said Workman.

Westin won a scholarship valued at $110,000 toward participating in the 2024 Mazda MX-5 Cup season.

“It blossomed my career,” Workman said. “Being here at IMSA, competing in IMSA with one of the most professional series in the nation, and being able to compete in the MX-5 Cup, in the entry level sportscar series, in a pro series, it’s a huge accomplishment of mine, a huge goal.”

Workman shared a little more about himself with Michelin.

“I’m from Charlotte, North Carolina,” Workman said. “I got into racing because of my dad. He was always into cars. He never raced, we didn’t really know where to start, so I started doing indoor karting and then met some people, moved to outdoor karting and now I’m here with Mazda Motorsports.”

Workman will compete in the Mazda MX-5 Cup next at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California from May 10–12.
