MotoGP: Alex Marquez claims Catalonia win

07/09/2025

Alex Marquez (BK8 Gresini MotoGP Team) finished clear of brother Marc (Ducati Lenovo Team) and Enea Bastianini (Red Bull KTM Tech 3) to win the Monster Energy Grand Prix of Catalonia, Round 15 of the 2025 MotoGPTM World Championship. Despite the little grip available, Michelin's tires performed strongly and helped the track record to tumble several times over the weekend. Read on for more about what happened at the Catalan GP.

Alex Marquez beat brother Marc to pocket the second premier-class win of his career after earlier claiming his second MotoGPTM pole position.

The latter got away well at lights-out and led for the first three laps, but the Gresini rider gained control on Lap 4. He then posted a series of quick times while taking care of his medium-compound Michelin slicks and was rewarded with his second success of the season after his victory at Jerez.

Marc secured his 14th sprint-race success of the year (and eighth on the trot) on Saturday but had to settle for second spot in Sunday's showpiece – also on medium slicks front and rear. The result means he will now not be able to clinch what would be a seventh MotoGPTM world crown (ninth in total) at next week's clash in Italy (Misano).

From ninth on the grid, Bastianini scored his first podium-finish in KTM's colors, aided by a superb start which earned him a place in the leading pack from the outset.

The day's top five was rounded out by Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) who was second in Saturday's sprint.

Despite the Catalonian circuit's lack of grip , Michelin helped a number riders take turns to better the venue's former lap record. That happened a first time during Friday afternoon's free practice and continued during Q1 and Q2. Alex Marquez ultimately bagged pole with a time of 1m37.536s, an improvement of 0.65s over the previous benchmark.

All the riders chose medium front and rear Michelin slicks for Saturday's race and then – with the exception of Acosta (soft rear) – opted for the same pairing for the grand prix.

Marc Marquez continues to top the provisional championship standings on 487 points, followed by brother Alex (+182 points). Francesco Bagnaia is third, but now 250 points short of his Ducati Lenovo Team team-mate.

Barcelona also hosted Round 5 of the 2025 MotoETM World Championship which saw Eric Granado (LCR E-Team) enjoy a grand-slam weekend (pole + both race wins). With two rounds and four races to go, seven riders are blanketed by just 23 points.

Next round: Red Bull Grand Prix of San Marino and the Rimini Riviera, Misano, Italy (September 12-14).
