MotoGP: Both Assen wins for Marquez
After qualifying fourth, Marc Marquez went on to win both Saturday's sprint and Sunday's grand prix for which he chose a front/rear combination of front and medium slicks, like the majority of the field.
The championship leader got away to a good start and emerged in front on the sixth of the afternoon's 26 laps. A string of consistently quick times then helped him to defend his leading cushion all the way to the checkered flag.
Coming after Aragon and Mugello, it was his third win in a row, plus his third at Assen where he previously topped the order in 2014 and 2018. The Spaniard has also drawn level with legend Giacomo Agostini as the second-most successful rider in motorcycle racing's premier class with a score of 68 victories. Only Valentino Rossi (89) can claim more.
Bezzecchi was second over the line to conclude Aprilia's strong showing in the Netherlands where the Italian was also third in the sprint. Bagnaia, Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Racing Factory) and Maverick Vinales (Red Bull KTM Tech 3) followed in third, fourth and fifth places.
With regard to tire fitments, there was little hesitation for the sprint race, since everyone lined up on the soft front and rear. The choice was a little more complex for the weekend's showpiece, however, and a number of last-minute changes were even seen on the grid.
By far the most popular pairing was the hard and medium MICHELIN Power front and rear. Somkiat Chantra (LCR Honda) was one of those who bucked the trend by going for the medium front (his reward being his first point of 2025), while others preferred the soft rear.
Low track temperatures made evaluating the different tire options difficult on Friday as the riders preferred to keep their softs for Saturday's qualifying and sprint.
In the provisional championship standings, Marc Marquez (307 points) is now 68 units clear of brother Alex (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP) who fell. Bagnaia is third on 181 points.
Assen also hosted Round 2 of the 2025 MotoETM World Championship which produced victories for Andrea Mantovani (KLINT Forward Factory Team) and Alessandro Zaccone (Aruba Cloud MotoE Team).
Next round: Liqui Moly Grand Prix of Germany, Sachsenring (July 11-13).
