MotoGP: Marquez triumphs in Mugello heat

22/06/2025

Marc Marquez (Ducati Lenovo Team) finished clear of his brother Alex (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP) and Fabio Di Giannantonio (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) to win the Brembo Grand Prix of Italy, Round 9 of the 2025 MotoGPTM World Championship. Aided by the consistency and grip of his MICHELIN Power Slicks, the Ducati rider overcame the heat to pocket yet another grand-slam weekend (pole-position, new lap record and both wins). Read on for more about what happened at the #ItalianGP.

Not only did Marc Marquez – #93 – chalk up the 93rd victory of his career (across all classes) at Mugello, but he also claimed his 100th pole-position with a new lap record (1m44.169s) that was 0.33s faster than the previous benchmark posted by Jorge Martin in 2024. The Spaniard also harvested his eighth 'sprint' success from nine this season.

Then, on Sunday, as the track temperature soared to 51°C, he steered his Ducati decked out in a special livery celebrating Leonard de Vinci and the Italian renaissance to another grand prix win after starting the 23-lap showpiece on a front/rear combination of medium and soft Michelin slicks.

The early laps produced a fierce scrap between the Spaniard, his brother and Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) who all took turns in front. On Lap 9, however, Marc took control for good and ultimately beat Alex over the line by almost two seconds after posting a string of consistently quick laps.

Having spent much of the distance in third spot, two-time world champion Bagnaia was passed by Di Giannantonio last time around and had to settle for fourth. Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing) fought back from 10th on the grid to fifth at the flag.

The Italian weekend was marked by extremely high track temperatures – in excess of 50°C – but Michelin's slicks shrugged off the challenge to play a part in a new record for Mugello during qualifying. For both races, all the riders chose the soft rear which provided more evidence of its versatility in spite of the hot weather.

Marc Marquez harvested 37 additional points in Italy to take his score to 270 and extend his lead in the provisional standings over Alex Marquez (230) and Bagnaia (160).

Next round: Motul Grand Prix of the Netherlands, Assen (June 27-29).
