Three makes on the Monza podium with Michelin

09/07/2023

The 2023 6 Hours of Monza was won by the #7 Toyota of Conway/Kobayashi/Lopez, ahead of the #50 Ferrari (Fuoco/Molina/Nielsen) and #93 Peugeot (Di Resta/Jensen/Vergne). Porsche/Michelin monopolized the LMGTE Am podium, but fourth in class for the #33 Michelin-equipped Corvette sufficed for Corvette Racing to claim this year's honors in the category.

Toyota Gazoo Racing bounced back from its first defeat at Le Mans in five years with an assertive display at Monza where its #7 GR010 Hybrid qualified on pole for the Italian race before securing Sunday's win, even though a Safety Car interruption threw the fight open for the last two hours or so. The Japanese car ended up 16.520 seconds clear of the second-placed Ferrari 499P .

Peugeot TotalEnergies followed up its promising run at Le Mans with a podium placing for its #93 Peugeot 9X8, while the #5 Porsche 963, #51 Ferrari and #8 Toyota, rounded out the afternoon's top six after an entertaining late scrap between the three cars. Their battle was so intense, in fact, that the Ferrari and the Toyota were handed penalties after the finish.

Named by the organizers to provide the tires for the 13 prototypes competing in the FIA WEC's headlining Hypercar class, Michelin proposed a choice between its medium- and hard-compound MICHELIN Pilot Sport slicks for the Italian fixture, with some teams opting to fit a combination of the two at times.

In LMGTE Am, where all the teams have chosen to compete on Michelin rubber for several seasons now, Porsche locked out the Monza podium with the #77 (Ried/Pedersen/Andlauer), #60 and #86 911 RSRs.

The #33 Corvette C8.R was fourth past the checkered flag to make sure of the campaign's Teams' and Drivers' Trophies for Corvette Racing and Ben Keating/ Nicolas Varrone/Nicky Catsburg respectively, the last before the class is officially dropped at the end of the year. The #85 Iron Dames Porsche/Michelin qualified on LMGTE Am pole in the hands of Sarah Bovy and ended up fifth.

The next round of the FIA WEC will take competitors to Japan for the 6 Hours of Fuji on September 8.
