Victory for Ferrari/Michelin in Texas!

01/09/2024

The 2024 Lone Star Le Mans was won by the #83 Ferrari 499P (Kubica/Shwartzman/Ye), but less than two seconds clear of the #7 Toyota GR010 Hybrid (Conway/Kobayashi/de Vries). Third was the #50 Ferrari 499P (Fuoco/Molina/Nielsen), while the #2 Cadillac and #35 Alpine followed in fourth and fifth places. The Hypercars' MICHELIN Pilot Sport slicks took the extreme heat and conditions of the six-hour contest at Circuit of The Americas (CoTA) in their stride.

- The Lone Star Le Mans provided the Ferrari 499P with its first FIA WEC success away from Le Mans. The 'privately'-run #83 Hypercar clinched the win after a fiercely fought race, beating the #7 Toyota to the flag by just 1.780s. That's the second-smallest winning margin in FIA WEC history.

- Ferrari monopolized the top three places during the race's early stages. The #51 pole-winning prototype was halted by mechanical trouble before the end of the first hour, however.

- CoTA is one of the most challenging circuits on the FIA WEC calendar, and this year's Lone Star Le Mans took place in particularly harsh conditions as the track temperature soared to 50°C. Michelin's partners were able to choose between the firm's medium and hard Pilot Sport slicks, although some cars – including the winning Ferrari – combined three mediums with a hard rear-right tire.

- Pierre Alves (manager of Michelin Motorsport's endurance-racing programs): "We were surprised to see our partners favor the medium as the track temperature climbed to 50°C. But it didn't suffer any degradation or excessive wear. No problems whatsoever!”

- BMW probably deserved better than the 8th and 13th places finally secured by its #15 and #20 cars. The two M V8 Hybrids qualified for the Hyperpole shoot-out and both figured in the top-five early on, but the latter part of the race proved more complex for the team.

- The #35 Alpine A424 qualified fourth on the grid in the hands of Charles Milesi before overcoming a tangle with the #2 Cadillac at the start of the race to finish fifth – the French make's best endurance-racing result of the season so far.

- The championship-topping #6 Porsche was only 14th on the grid after a troubled qualifying session. It fought back to sixth place at the race's checkered flag, though, just ahead of Porsche Penske Motorsport's other car.

- The next round of the 2024 FIA WEC will take teams to Japan in a fortnight's time.
